College Application Essay Preparation
Intensive preparation for college application essays, personal statement development, and overall application narrative strategy.
Who This Is For
High school students (Grades 10–12) preparing college application essays, personal statements, and overall application materials for competitive college admissions. Best results come from starting in the summer before senior year. Students starting in 10th or 11th grade can use the time to develop the experiences and reflection that make essays write themselves later.
Course Content
We start with deep brainstorming, the student talks, the mentor listens and reflects back what's actually distinctive. Out of that conversation comes a working list of essay angles. The student drafts; the mentor revises; the student rewrites; this cycle runs as many rounds as the essay needs. Then we move to supplements (the 'Why Us' essays, the 'Tell us about a community' prompts), the activity list, and the additional information section. Finally, full-application review and interview prep.
How ToIvy Teaches This
The college essay isn't a writing test, it's a thinking test in writing form. The hardest part isn't the prose; it's figuring out what to actually say. So we spend a serious amount of time on conversation before the student writes a single word. By the time they draft, they know what story they're telling and why it matters. The writing becomes much faster.
Class Format & Structure
1-on-1 mentorship throughout. Sessions scheduled around the student's pace, some students need weekly meetings, others need intense work in the summer and lighter touch in the fall. Communication includes call-based consultation between sessions.

Questions Parents Ask Us
When should we start?
Summer before senior year is ideal. Starting in October of senior year is doable but tight. Earlier than that and we focus on experience-building so the essays have material to draw from.
Will the essay still sound like my child?
Yes, that's the whole point. We don't write the essay; we coach the student to write something only they could have written. Admissions officers can spot a ghostwritten essay instantly.
How does this differ from VIP College Application Services?
Essay prep focuses specifically on the essays, supplements, and application materials. VIP is a full multi-year strategy that includes essays plus everything else. Many families do essay prep alone if they don't need the full long-term strategy.
