Mark Twain Writing
Preparation for the Mark Twain writing exam in Brooklyn, developing structured multi-paragraph writing skills.
Who This Is For
Students in Grades 4 and 5 who plan to apply to Mark Twain Middle School for Science and Technology, particularly those targeting the writing talent test. Also valuable for any 4th–5th grader whose writing at school is short, formulaic, or hard to follow, the structural training carries far beyond the Mark Twain test.
Course Content
Each class focuses on one writing mode, narrative, descriptive, or analytical, and rotates through all three across the term. Students start with a prompt, brainstorm aloud with the teacher, draft, and then revise. The teacher reads every draft and returns it with line-level feedback (not just a grade). The second half of the term shifts to timed practice that mirrors the actual Mark Twain prompt structure, so students walk into the test having written under that exact pressure many times.
How ToIvy Teaches This
Mark Twain doesn't reward fancy vocabulary, it rewards a clear, well-organized response that answers the prompt. So we don't teach 'big words.' We teach structure: a real introduction, body paragraphs that each do one job, and a conclusion that lands. Then we add voice, then we add timed practice. Students who finish the program have written 20–30 pieces, all read by a real teacher.
Class Format & Structure
Weekly 3-hour sessions on weekends, capped at 10 students. First block: instruction on a writing technique + group brainstorm. Middle block: independent drafting with teacher circulation. Final block: peer-and-teacher review of drafts in progress. Each piece is collected, marked, and returned the following week. Late-term sessions add a 25–35 minute timed write to build exam stamina.

Questions Parents Ask Us
When should my child start preparing?
Mid-4th grade is ideal. Starting earlier than that is fine for general writing, but the focused Mark Twain prep makes most sense once the child can already write a basic paragraph.
My child applies to other middle schools too. Is this still useful?
Yes, the writing structure transfers directly to SHSAT essay sections, SSAT writing, and the writing portion of any private school application.
