Reading Comprehension
Build depth and accuracy in reading comprehension for high school academic study, from article structure analysis to accurate answering.
Who This Is For
Students in Grades 8–11 who read the words but lose the meaning: they finish a passage and still can't locate the argument, trace the structure, or select the right answer confidently. Also strong readers who want to close the gap between understanding a text and performing accurately on academic assessments. This course is directly applicable to Regents ELA, SAT Reading, AP English, and any class requiring evidence-based written response.
Course Content
This course builds the reading accuracy that high school assessments demand. Each session focuses on a different passage type (literary fiction, nonfiction argument, paired documents, informational text) and works through it systematically: article structure breakdown, paragraph function analysis, key information and argument logic identification, and finally question orientation and option evaluation. Students practice not just comprehension but the decisional process that turns comprehension into correct answers. The course runs Sundays 9 AM–12 PM and covers material directly applicable to Regents ELA, SAT Reading and Writing, AP Language and Literature, and any school course that grades on textual analysis.
How ToIvy Teaches This
Most kids who 'can't read' actually can, they just don't have the context to know what they're reading. We give them the context (when, where, who, why) before they encounter the text, then teach them how to find the next layer of meaning themselves. Vocabulary is taught the way fluent readers learn it: by encountering useful words again and again in different texts, not by memorizing lists.
Class Format & Structure
Weekly 3-hour sessions, Sundays 9 AM–12 PM. Each class works through a full passage: article structure breakdown → paragraph function analysis → key information and argument logic identification → question orientation and option evaluation. Students practice the complete path from text comprehension to accurate answering on every passage.

Questions Parents Ask Us
My child reads a lot but doesn't really 'get' what they read. Will this help?
This is exactly the problem we solve. Volume of reading isn't enough on its own, students need someone to show them how to read for meaning. That's the whole course.
Is this SHSAT or SAT prep?
No, but it's the foundation that makes both much easier. Students who do this for a year before SHSAT/SAT prep typically need fewer hours of test prep later.
What if my child is already a strong reader?
We push the reading list harder, primary sources, dense nonfiction, more sophisticated short fiction. Strong readers don't get bored here; they get challenged.
